SHOWPLACE'S HISTORY:
March 1982 Showplace, Inc. was founded, operating under the name TV Outlet. Co-founders Gary Ferriman and Ron Simpson located the business on Mound Street in Marion, Ohio. The original principal business was reconditioning and selling used televisions and other electronics including home satellite systems.
The company was incorporated and moved to its present location at 611 Bellefontaine Avenue in Marion. Over the next three years, new product lines such as videos, appliances and furniture were added.
A decision was made to expand the rental business, and Showplace purchased the former Kenton Rent to Own in Kenton, Ohio in May. Georgia Carpet in Edison, Ohio was acquired during September.
The company refocused its energy on the rental business, opening a fourth location in Bucyrus, Ohio.
The stores were renamed Showplace Rental and new locations were opened in Bellefontaine, Delaware and Mt. Vernon, Ohio.
By this time, satellites, carpet and all other non-rental business had been eliminated and a new store was opened in Troy, Ohio. 1993 Showplace Rental added another location in Marysville, Ohio.
The company's growth was accelerated through the purchase of a competitor in Mount Vernon, Ohio along with the opening of new stores in Canton, Wooster, Perry Heights and Sidney, Ohio.
Expansion in the western part of the state continued with the opening of a store in Urbana, Ohio. In July of that year, Ron Simpson sold his shares in the company to the employees, initiating the employee-owned status. 1996 Additional stores were opened in Celina and Mansfield, Ohio.
After an in-depth market study, it was determined that most Perry Heights customers actually lived in Canton so that store was consolidated with the Canton store. During September, a store was added in Galion, Ohio.
Springfield and Tiffin, Ohio stores contributed to the growing chain during August.
During fiscal 2000, five more stores were acquired, three in Columbus and one each in Warren and Newark, Ohio.
February marked another location opening in Huber Heights, Ohio. During the summer of 2003, the direction of the company was re-evaluated. With much thought and preparation, Gary Ferriman (President, Co-Founder) purchased the 51% ownership back from the employees. Around that same time, the decision was made to sell 10 of the then 24 locations. These 14 locations remain: Marion, Kenton, Edison, Bucyrus, Bellefontaine, Delaware, Marysville, Canton, Urbana, Mansfield, Galion, Springfield, Columbus West and Huber Heights. In the time since the sale, Showplace as a team has strengthened and built momentum. We’re better than ever and ready to serve. How can we help you?
